Company Of Hounds
“I hope to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.”
We’re proud parents to two Basset Hounds which really are ridiculous creatures. Having had collies and spaniels as a child, I’m not entirely sure how we’ve ended up with dogs that haven’t quite mastered the ‘sit’ command – despite being 8 and 9.
A few years ago, I bought a card that shows a cat saying to a dog ‘You, sir, are a buffoon’. This is probably the most used phrase in our house and changes from sir to madam depending on which hound we’re referring to.
Bertie was 8 weeks old when we brought him home and looking at the 4-stone lump he is now, it’s hard to believe he was ever that tiny puppy that kept falling over his own ears. Bertie is everything a Basset Hound is described as – friendly, gentle, vocal and unbelievably stubborn. He used to be a Pets As Therapy dog and every week we’d visit a local care home where if I’m completely honest, he was probably a bit more interested in biscuits than the old folk he was visiting. He’s had adventures galore from falling in the canal as a puppy to the time when he and his Golden Retriever friend formed a tag team to rob a man of his lunchtime chips. Oh the shame!
Sally, on the other hand, it’s fair to say has ‘issues’. We think of her as the hound equivalent of Little Britain’s Vicky Pollard and if she were human, I have no doubt she would have an ASBO! Re-homed by us aged 7 months, the damage had already been done and we’ve spent many years trying to resolve her ‘challenging behaviour’. Yet despite the gruff exterior, she’s an incredibly affectionate dog. And I think I’ve learnt more about dogs in the past few years than I had in a lifetime of other dogs. I’m sure many owners of rescue dogs will say the same thing.
Despite their many faults, we laugh every day at their hilarious antics. When you’ve regularly got slobber half way up your walls, you have no choice but to laugh do you??
Our hounds are the whole inspiration for Company Of Hounds. Wanting to provide the best for them has led to us wanting to help you provide the best for your hounds too. Almost all of the images on our website are of our hounds and their chums as we wanted to really try and portray what Company Of Hounds is all about.
Now where have those buffoons snuck off to? If they’re on my bed again…….
