There has been great excitement in our house this week as the hounds are being whisked off to Hollywood to star in a blockbuster movie with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman! OK – that’s not quite true but there’s been lots of excitement nevertheless.
We were contacted on social media by someone asking if we knew of any well behaved Basset Hounds that would be interested in taking part in an advert for dog food. We responded, advising that unfortunately we didn’t know any well behaved Bassets but we did know two very badly behaved ones that would love to take part – they are, after all, masters in the art of eating and sleeping and what other requirements could there possibly be? Obviously, if the advert involved them moving around to command, or, heaven forbid, having to sit or stay, we might be in trouble but there would certainly be no problem in getting them to eat the product in question – regardless of what it might be! And if there ended up being multiple takes and them having to eat the food again and again – they’d have it nailed!
The next step was to submit a recent photograph and provide a few details about them. We agonised over which photo to send – which one shows their best profile? Do they look ‘Bassety’ enough in this one? Eventually one was settled on and off it went, with the promise that the agent would be in touch if they wanted to take it any further.
Having failed to mention Sally’s ASBO tendencies we then started fretting over what we’d do if she was selected. Given that she tends to growl at men, men in hats and men in hats wearing hi-vis clothing, what if anyone involved in the advert fell in to those categories? And what if it was Bertie that was picked? He’s so laid-back he’s horizontal but if they wanted him to actually DO something! Oh the dilemmas. Yet at the same time, we were getting quite carried away by the potential career opening up before us. Who knew where this would lead? After years of shelling out on food, treats and vet bills, the hounds were finally going to be the key to our fame and fortune.
Alas, as we fully expected, the agent has not been in touch and Hollywood does not appear to be on the horizon. However, it’s provided a bit of excitement, they’ve posed for their already adoring fans and most importantly, they remain superstars to us.
